Bern Herbolsheimer (1948-2016) was born in Great Falls, Montana, United States. As a composer, he received recognition throughout the United States and Europe for over 500 works ranging from ballet to symphonic, operatic, chamber and choral works. As a pianist, Bern Herbolsheimer accompanied numerous artists at concerts and festivals throughout the world. He was a frequent award winner and his works appear on dozens of CDs.
Herbolsheimer served on the music faculty of the Cornish College of Arts in Seattle, where he taught composition-related classes and held a private studio. He also worked at the University of Washington, where he taught graduate classes in the voice programme.
In 2008, Bern Herbolsheimer wrote The Master and Margarita, a sonata for cello and piano. He took four scenes from the novel for the movements of his sonata. It was premiered at the Cornish College of Arts in Seattle in 2008.
